A hometown legacy

Why this naming is meaningful

  • Duane Ward grew up in Farmington and developed through local youth sports, Farmington High School, and professional baseball, ultimately becoming an MLB All-Star and a member of the Toronto Blue Jays’ 1992 and 1993 World Series championship teams.
  • His story reflects perseverance, humility, teamwork, and the belief that young people can rise from modest beginnings to achieve at the highest level.
  • After his playing career, Duane continued giving back to the sport through youth baseball camps and outreach.
  • The Duane Ward Memorial project also seeks to establish a permanent scholarship endowment, managed through the Wally D Sports Scholarship Foundation, to assist graduating San Juan County student-athletes from all sports as they continue to college, university, vocational education, or trade school.
  • The proposed park signage and memorial are intended to be supported through private fundraising, in-kind gifts, donated materials, and donated services, subject to City approval.
